Treatment for Diabetic patients

What is the most popular medicine to treat a type 2 diabetic person nowadays?

Fasting Sugar levels of 180 or below can be managed without medication if the patient is less than 55 years of age

High Fiber Low Sugar Diets, More Meals a day in smaller portions, Stopping all alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, Fruit juices instead of milk, Egg Whites, Fish, Chappatis instead of Rice, Kerala Rice instead of White Rice, No Pasta or White Bread

If FBS is above 180 mg/dl then

⇒ Metaformin + Glimperide if FBS > 180 but <= 250 mg/dl

This is a combination of targeting your liver to manage glycogen conversion and reducing insulin resistance and increasing insulin production

Typically Metaformin comes in 1000 mg, 2000 mg or 500 mg per tablet dose and Glimperide comes in 1 mg and 2 mg per tablet dose

Its usually enough

 AGIs or Alpha Glucosinase Inhibitors if FBS is more than 250 but less than 340 mg/dl

They promote rapid conversion of carbohydrates

Typically ends in ‘ose’ like Edibose or Voglibose

 Pioglitazone

I hate these medicines personally. Loads of side effects

 Insulin Therapy for consistent FBS > 350 mg/dl
